In early stages when there was a very less number of websites and blogs the competition was comparatively very low but as the time passed a lot of experts and engineers started used different types of words which made the competition very hard so it keeps a great importance in SEO.

Popularity

As we studied in Relevance that a search engine presents the search result by firstly comparing the words of different websites to the search query so now a question arises that is it the only factor ?

Then the answer is 'NO'

The popularity of the website also have a great influence in top search results because search engines take popular websites as a better website for the user and search engine assumes that popular websites can fulfil the desires of the user.

That is why Popularity is also a factor.
